After watching season 3, episode 10 of the show GIRLS, I’m perplexed in the concept of role playing. Lena Durham’s character has always been absolutely problematic to me but I think her odd attraction to being degraded in bed is the least of her problematic nature. Don’t get me wrong, i don’t take being called a slut lightly but i feel like when Lena is in that character she’s role playing, she embraces the aspects of being a slut in a positive sexual way. I’m probably perceiving this from how positive she is about her body even though it is very cringe to watch, but i applaud her for her efforts. But her fantasies are nonetheless weird. Wanting to be the lonely deprived wife seducing or being raped by a stranger (???) isn’t unheard of but I’m not entirely sure what to make of it. Do you morally analyze this or do you cough it up to just being …..role play? I’m not entirely sure, I haven’t explored that area personally yet but from where i see it, and from reading her book “Not that kind of Girl”, she does it to feel like she is desired. From her book she confesses how she likes everything that leads up to sex and role playing is just another type of build up to sex. Not to mention the thrill someone would get when sneaking around probably also heightens the experience.
Honestly Lena’s fantasy isn’t even that terribly bad. I had the unfortunate luck of reading some very disgusting and degrading role plays when trying to research more about it that is just better not shared to spare you all.
